Overview

Camels is a high mountain site, with launch around 8,000 ft above sea level (a little over 3,000 ft above the LZ). Camels has a tendency to blow down in the very early AM, as the sun heats the back side of the launch. Once the Sun starts heating the below valley, thermal cycles typically roll in. Camels is not a ridge-lift site, and if it's blowing too hard the thermals tend to be broken up (same as Inspiration about 10 miles down on the same mountain range).

Directions

Launch: 40.184682, -111.567677

Take I-15 to the Springville/Rt 77 exit. Turn left off of exit ramp to head East on Rt 77 (400 S). Follow to a 4-way stop. Go straight and take your first left to go to the LZ, or turn right to head to launch. Heading to launch follow signs for Hobble Creek Golf Course. Just past the golf course, the road forks- take the LEFT fork ("Left Fork Hobble Creek Road"). Continue 2.5 miles and turn left onto dirt road. Follow for roughly 20 mins. Launch is a very obvious (steep) left fork in the road. Serious 4-Wheel-Drives can drive the last 100 ft, but there is little room to turn around.

When standing on launch, the piano-shaped field directly below launch is the LZ, can't miss it (roughly a 2.5:1 glide).

History

One of the venues used for the 2008 Wings Over Wasatch/Mitch McAleer aerobatics clinic.

Geography/Meteorology

Clubs/Owners/Manager

Launch and the road up are public land (forest service), and open to recreational use. The LZ is privately owned by a nearby resident nicknamed "Skinny". Skinny is very friendly, as are the rest of the nearby residents. Please be courteous and respectful that we are landing in these people's back yard.
