#1 |
Just for fun, here's an account of my most interesting flying day this year...
Darn Cow-Sh1t: Chapter 1
After a bit of height topping up in the main bowl, I headed into the large landing field just behind the bowl. As I turned into wind the glider started coming down quickly; well I'm committed now. Somehow, I managed to swoop down very close to the ground, ground slide through a cow-pat (yuk), pop the nose up a little and land on my feet. It wasn't graceful and I was now covered in cow-shite! Nice!
Darn Cow-Sh1t: Chapter 2
I walked towards a good launch spot. Without realising it I stepped into another very slippery cow-pat. My left foot immediately slid left and I almost went face-down. If this had continued I'd probably have popped the nose of the glider, most likely ground looping it. It didn't look at all graceful and was probably quite a spectacle to all the spectators watching. I quickly recomposed myself ready for launch.
And to conclude the day....
Bent Aluminium
My landing approach was perfect, wings level and into wind. I started to slow the glider then, for some reason which is still unclear to me, I felt what I thought was the right time to flare. I flared aggressively but unfortunately this launched me and glider 20 feet into the air. Holy crap! My brain kept repeating, "don't pull in, don't pull in"! I held the wing above me as it rapidly began parachuting down. I think the right wing descended slightly faster than the left. I was able to get my feet on the ground, but my legs simply gave out on impact, the right wheel and upright then took the remaining energy. End result, slight bend in right upright and my pride compromised! Dam, I'd had this glider for ages and this was the first time I'd damaged it!
... good news, I was out again yesterday, avoid all cow-sh1te and fixed my landing problem!

Don't worry, even the experts do it:

Too potentially turbulent up here today for flying but picturesque:

Yeap, it went something like that; I've recently been flying with a video camera, but on this occasion I didn't have it. Shame really as it would have given us all something to laugh about! Especially the lubrication I received from first said cow sh1te.
The Lakes are such a lovely area of the country; great photos - looks a little bit like wave clouds! I was flying yesterday (Devil's Dyke) and it was pretty turbulent and windy there too - no problem with landing and takeoff's, but I think I was flying quite close to the limit of my single surface (well, when ground handling; I definitely needed a nose man!). I guess that's the reflex at work!

I confess I've bent some aluminium recently as well:
on Lord's Seat in the peaks, the Sunday a week and a half ago, I launched into wave which wasn't quite on the hill, then fought my way above the ridge and out in front to contact the lift and made 2'000 ato.
After half an hour I could stand the cold no longer, and fought to get back down. To cut a long story short I ended up going 30deg downslope after being fooled into thinking the slope was the horizon in my final turn. Facing road and/or trees I turned into the slope and flared.
Cost: two uprights and a keel, and nearly a basebar too. I'm very grateful that spares for my Magic are nice and cheap!

That second photo, is that the exhaust from a surface to air missile? Glad you've fixed your wing up; Mmmm, the Peaks, another great bit of countryside!

I think they're users of the flight lane going up to Glasgow/Edinburgh
