Andy Jackson Memorial fly-in... fun times, long flights. Lift everywhere.
I was putting my glider on my van when, according to my sister in law, my name was announced to come to the scoring table. Some guy named Greg (or is it Gary? Pesky beer) was looking for me. I shake his hand and pretend I know him long enough to ask his online moniker.
OMFGitwasRadwhacker! I'll leave the tales of the day to him, but he had a bummer day.
GTPowell was up flying circles around Dave and me... here's a pic of all of us:

Busy day at launch... there were about 4 gliders out of the field of view, too. The sky was dirty with wings... fun time.

Yep, I've had better days...
I went to Elsinore in the morning to meet up with my buddy John Pitt and fly the "E". The plan was to fly from Elsinore to Crestline and drop in for the party.
Unfortunately, I dawdled around too long on launch and got blown down on. So I packed up, loaded my glider on a friend's truck and headed down to the Z.
At the Z I went to take my glider off the truck to transfer it to mine and head to Crestline. As soon as I untied it it rolled off the side of the rack and was headed for the side mirror. I grabbed for it, it jammed into my index finger and bent it backwards.
I looked at my finger and didn't like the angle it took from the knuckle outward - about 30 degrees or so.
I went over to the E-Teamers hanging out and said, "Look" and held up my hand. They all groaned and went running for their cameras.
Off to the emergency hospital.
Turned out to just be dislocated so the Doc gave me a shot and yanked - good as new.
So, no flying today, but at least I made it out to Crestline in time to meet Knumbknuts, DesignbyDave and GTPowell.
Hang Gliding IS a dangerous sport!

Ooof. What a pic.
"Excuse me, where is the Emergency Room"
"Over there" (points)
"The planter?"
"No, over there!" (points)
"The fountain?"
"NO, OVER THERE!" (points)
"Dude, I have no idea what you are pointing at"

It's a good thing it was THAT finger. Other options might have been more embarrassing. Particularly, once all splinted and bandaged up.

The pic doesn't really do it justice. Beside the bend to the right it also bent about the same angle towards the camera.
If it didn't hurt so bad it would have been worth it just for the gross out factor.

What a day. Man I had a great time flying with you all today. John you’re awesome. I'm interested to know how long your flight was today? I guess near 3:45-hours.
Rad, it was great to see you today. I wish I had more opportunity to talk with ya. Sorry you missed out on some great flying today. Cranking lift along the ridge. I counted over 16 gliders (and one- upset paraglider) in the air above launch at one point. The paraglider had appearently ridden the lift over the billboard up several hundred feet and then fell out. After over an hour and multiple collapses, he finally traveled the couple of hundred yards he needed to get back out front of the billboard. "That funny " I kept watching him and wondering why he was just hanging out where he was for so long. I had no idea he couldn’t penetrate to get back out front. I understand he was not a happy camper at the LZ.
Dave, as always, great flying with you today. It’s very comforting to know you can trust the guys around you when it gets as crowded as it was. I look forward to seeing your pics from today.
Rob, Dianne and others, “Thank-You” for your tremendous effort to make this fly-in as much fun as it was post flying. Food was great and so was the company. Thanks………!!!

Comedy gold, I'd like to hear more about this. I saw that guy and thought the same thing, but didn't pay much attention to him. There was another pantie that plowed right through the middle of my thermal circle at billboard, the first good boomer I found. PGs have their place... and they should know it.

I too got my longest flight, 2hr 35min. Could have stayed up longer but the usual excuses came in: hungry, cold, tired etc... Muscling a big ol Falcon 1 un there in the 28mph or so winds was hard work.

I'm in front with the grin after a great 3-hour flight and Radwacker's in the background. As with Dave, I could have stayed up another hour or so, but lost track of time and chose to land for other reasons.
With so many HG's in the air at once, and everybody chasing one-another’s lift when being out thermalled, was a great time. We were constantly watching over our shoulder's to avoid one-another, flying 30-40 feet over one another, and consistently giving way to each other when one of us was getting severely handled by a thermal. What a gas.....!!

Great write-up KK! Excellent flights for both you and Dave by the sound of it!!!
Dave, I feel your pain about muscling falcons around. When I rented that Falcon from Rob, I got tired after only 20-30 minutes of it. Have you thought about getting a double surface? At the rate you're progressing, I'd say you're probably more than ready for it!
Rad, your comment about your friend groaning and running for their cameras was perfect!!

Now that I think about it, that's the single biggest difference between a Falcon 1/2 and a Falcon 3 to me: maneuverability.
Mind you, I weigh 200 and I went from the Falcon 1 225 to the Falcon 3 195, so wing loading is a factor.
Nonetheless, my first flight on a 3 I was amazed at how much more responsive it was to roll inputs. Because the lightness of touch, it's harder to feel the flare point on landings, but it's still a Falcon and you are mostly like just to fly through it than flare too early or too fast.
I'm going to add "maneuverability" to "penetration" on the list of things I prefer about the 3 over the 1/2.

it seems Dave got a rather nice check in the mail the other day, so a new glider may be in the works...

Gratz on getting the scholarly money and using on the practical application of aerodynamics!
