Campers,

Most places, the legal limit for flying an aircraft without oxygen is 10000 feet (~3km) MSL. Some of the mountain launches here are about that high, and flat ground below is maybe half of that. People who live on the flat ground here are usually fine at the top of the mountains, because they are acclimated to the higher altitudes. Visiting pilots here, who usually live at or near sea level, can be showing the early signs of hypoxia, even during the drive up to launch. When they get up to our mountain launches, they may have headaches, show confusion, and start vomiting. Depending on the pilot's health, it can take a week or three to become accustomed to the altitudes here.

Oxygen is the cure, of course, but if nobody brought any, the visiting pilot will need to get back down to flat ground ASAP. As you see in the video, asking the visitor if they are okay can be a waste of time. Their own assessment of their mental condition may be far from accurate.

Mr. Green

I had hypoxia training in the Navy.

As long as I don't have to smell the depressurized flatulence of a large gentleman named "Isaac," I'll be fine.

I was wondering why he kept leaning on one cheek the whole way up. I'll never know what really kept me from doing the alphabet backward after we took our masks off.

This is how I would want to die when that time comes obviously.

Chamber rides were so much fun. The one really good thing about them is that you learn your particular first symptoms of hypoxia are which can come in handy when getting up to higher altitudes with your glider.
