#1 |
I was out at Crestline several months back and I was talking to two pilots (both are NorthWing dealers). I have to step down from my blade wing and I am looking at a Freedom 170 as a possible next wing. Both made the same statement that the VG on the Freedom was not worth getting. One of them said that the only difference that he could see was that with VG full, the handling of the wing became stiff, but he saw no improvement to the glide of the wing. Any freedom pilots have anything to say? Is this what you have found to be the case? Or do you disagree and believe that the VG option is worth it? _________________ Bamboo Bomber –Freeflight 17 ft STD – Cal Gliders Moth 18 ft STD - Cal Gliders 19X16 Short Keel - UP Dragonfly – Cal Gliders WindGypsy Mk 4 – Quicksilver M -Twenty years later… Wills Wing Falcon- Altair Saturn 167, Predator142. I don't have the VG on mine, but there is definitely a difference between the three settings on the haul back, so I would assume the same of the VG. It isn't anything like the difference with my U2 when I pull the VG on full of course. I will get it on my next Freedom. What is the cost to add VG? _________________ Wills Wing U2 160

Don't know about the effectiveness on glide but I do want it just for the ability to change handling for thermic conditions etc. _________________ Freedom 170 FR |

It doesn't. The VG doesn't improve the handling. It is still way too hard to pull in after pulling on the VG. _________________ Davis Straub at the Oz Report |

I owned a Freedom 170 and it was a great SS glider and I only flew it in the tight setting and it handled the same as my Falcon 3 195 but w/ a little bit more speed and glide. Why not consider a Sport 2? I owned one of these and it will turn just as tight and the VG is actually effective on the Sport 2. Mine weighed less than my Freedom and had much better penetration. I do feel the Freedom had easier handling in case you are suffering from weaknesses in the muscles, joints, ligaments, etc. I'm no Spring chicken myself and am enjoying what I consider to be my last few years on a topless glider before I throttle back to my Falcon and then rocking chair. |

But does it roll any easier with the VG off?
I would think the looser sail would ease the handling. (turning) I don't find the bar pressure an issue. |
