#1 |
I "inherited" a damaged Dream 220, and am trying to find an owner's manual & batten chart for it so I can restore it to airworthy condition.
Does anyone have one that I can borrow, copy & return?
Also, I heard mixed reports about it's pitch stability being dicey, and that it needed additional luff lines.
It was HGMA certified... but I also heard unconfirmed rumors about Delta Wing "cheating" on the certification documentation.
Does anyone know anything more about the history of this glider design?
The Hang Glider Bible webpage is scant on details, and many google searches have come up empty.
BTW, this is one that was manufactured by UP after Delta Wing folded, and before Teddy Mack & Co (Air Sports International) took over ownership.

Contact Teddy Mack, he can probably help you out.

The guys at "Thunderbird" in San Diego are building gliders based on the "Dream" design. At least that is what I have been led to believe. Also, John Heiney would be a good source of info, as he teaches with a "Dream 185".
Hope this helps.

Some testimony about pitch stability and bar pressure problems were raised at this webpage:
http://www.delta-club-82.com/bible/73-hang-glider-dream.htm
Reportedly, the problem was only on a small number of Dream 220s made.
I've heard some opinions like " it's divergent " and rumors about Bill Bennett's Delta Wing & Kites company not reporting HGMA certification data properly, but I have no confirmation of any of this.
On the glider I have, there is only one pair of luff lines, and washout struts.
Does anybody know more about this?

According to HGMA website at http://www.hgma.net/ .. the Dream 220 is certified.
Manufacturer: Bill Bennett's Delta Wing Kites and Gliders
Model: Lite Dream 220
Current Production: No
Date: 8/27/1986
ID: 19860801
Type: Package
Certificate ID: 8605
Does anyone have a manual or any other info on it? .. would like to know some details on it before doing something terribly wrong...

Dan,
Then, the HGMA certification package should have some useful technical information on the Dream for you, such as luff line settings, et c.
Might be worth trying to contact them. I do not have a contact point for them, though.

Thanks, Red.
Wills Wing's Mike Meier is still the HGMA prez... I planned to call him as a last resort, but I doubt he has the info. I need... specifically, spars, rigging and luff line dimensions.
I really would prefer an actual Dream 220 manual from a current owner.
I have tried many times to get this basic info. from Teddy Mack at Thunderbird,
EDIT: after talking to Teddy just now, maybe he'll get me some info. next week, but I still need an owners manual .. please help !!

Attached is a scanned page from an owner's manual, sent to me courtesy of John Heiney.
220 down tubes look like they are 68.75 inches long with holes and a notch as noted.
Mine were 1-1/8 inch OD with full length innersleeve of 1 inch OD.. and no notch, as shown in sketch..
When UP made Dreams, there were some differences from the Delta Wing originals.. it looks to me like UP beefed up the tubing and hardware.
If anybody needs a full copy of these scanned manual pages, just shoot me a PM, and I will email them to you.

iliofos,
Dan has the drawing for a Dream here, for you,
http://www.hanggliding.org/viewtopic.php?p=300354#300354
and if you use MS-Windows on your computer,
you might like to download this free conversion calculator there.
Convert almost any measurement into almost any measurement:
http://joshmadison.com/convert-for-windows/
The conversion calculator uses decimals, not fractions.
Convert a fraction to a decimal by dividing the bottom number into the top number:
1/16 = 0.0625
3/32 = 0.09375

I have a dream 220 in perfect condition . When the Ex- divorced me last year she threw out a lot of my stuff including my Dream 220 man . I have a couple of extra downtubes for it if you need size dementions and stuff . I have flown the glider many times and have never had any problems with it being divergent or anything of the sort . I bought it so I could fly people tandem . If I can ever get certified . I remember its rated to 480 Lbs. top end . Super easy to fly and land . Has luff lines and a connection from the keel for the keel pocket . Has a swivel system junction for the crossbar to the keel . Dave said it was the best Tandem glider ever made. He has hundreds of tandem flights so he knows what he is doing We need to take them to the South side one day and compare. I belive mine was one of the last ones made
