I've had a few requests for details on my new camera boom so I took a set of essential photos that I uploaded here: http://imageevent.com/aero92/camboom
This is the boom I used to shoot this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUbwQ8Btin0
The design has been a work in progress for nearly 4 years. This incarnation is extremely versatile and should serve most needs. I apologize for not adding captions but I've been pretty busy. Initially, I may make a narrated video slide show by using the same set of photos and discussing each aspect. Later, I may add captions.

That is a Wills Wing skid for their aluminum speedbar and a Flytec aluminum U-joint.
The skid has been modified by splitting and adding the long thumbscrew so I can install it wherever I choose. A Delrin adapter has been machined to fit the U-joint and is installed on the skid with a 1/4-20 flat-head screw.
The U-joint slot has been opened up on the opposite side so the boom can swing all the way through from side to side or up and down if you twist it.
The ball that fits into the U-joint is from a Fly-tec vario mounting paddle. It has been drilled all the way through and tapped w/ 1/4-20 threads.
The stainless steal stud goes through the ball and through the adapter rod for the boom tubing. The adapter rod is drilled out to 1/4" and the stud is firmly anchored to the ball and adapter w/ a 1/4-20 lock nut on the end.
Many pilots will have to improvise and modify the design to suit their control bars as well as machining and material availability. The only fancy tool I own is a drill press and drill press vice. Everything else is done with basic shop hand tools.
The overall design is the result of a lot of expereince w/ flimsy booms that shake or break too easily. I plan to make a completely new design that will be more robust and easier for me to use actively while flying.

Excellent Jonathan. Where did you get the swivel assembly that mates the Gopro to the boom? Also, was the boom fabricated from tubing stock or was it the original vario tubing?

Hi Greg,
The swivel assembly was made from an Ultrapod II that I cut down to the bare minimum. I also drilled and tapped it where the molded stud was located and replaced the large tension thumb screw w/a small Nylon thumb screw.
The boom is made from 5/8" diameter aluminum tube. It was a tent pole and the inserts were tips. I would not use tube smaller than 1/2". I prefer 5/8" or even 3/4".
If I have more time I'll take more photos and try to show how the Ultrapod II was modified.
Note: If you look closely, you will see I have a screw that prevents the GoPro tripod adapter from unscrewing itself from the ball head of the Ultrapod II. This little feature is extremely important.

Came up with this patterned somewhat after your design. The parts are Flytec, GoPro and an scavenged screw from an old camera mount C-clamp. My main weak point compared to yours is the Flytec connection to my speedbar (mine won't be as sturdy). Hope to give it a try tomorrow!
Thanks for posting your stuff Jonathan! Good motivation to a bit more innovative.

Steve - Your setup will work fine for most purposes. As soon as it gets bumpy it will shake but that is why we edit. Many pilots use a similar setup but go with a shorter boom which will avoid the shakes but lose a little reach. I'm sure you will be happy. When I have more time I will give you some unsolicited advice on hos to improve your setup. But is will be based on experience rather than 'thought experiments'.

There are soooo many threads about camera booms. Why hasn't anyone put these into production?
