Sorry deeprecon1,

I would love to join you, but I just contacted my future instructor (Tammy Burcar) to take lessons towards my H1+H2 in Santa Barbara, so I am many, many months away from you.

Have fun!

I might be down to sniff some ridgelift. Maybe head up to whaleback and launch by 12, pack up and get back to the rim for glass off...

DD I was hoping you would join.

Remember all the crying during the winter … all the new pilots in our area screaming for airtime ?

Im trying to pay it forward …. If you come out it would be icing on the cake. A new Instructor to help out all the newbies … if they choose to show up.

Truth is telling, you have to want it and go after it in this sport. Spread the word … I hope Jimmy can join us … maybe Josh

Thanks. A copy and paste from the site:

Quote:
PILOT PROFICIENCY: Pilots flying Hat Creek Rim should have at least a United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association foot launched H3/P3 (intermediate) Rating and be proficient in; Restricted Landing Field (RLF), Turbulence (TUR), and Assisted Windy Cliff Launch (AWCL). Pilots launching the South Launch must have an ADVANCED rating with RLF, TUR and AWCL special skills. Pilots should wear a helmet and carry a reserve chute while flying Hat Creek Rim.

Does this mean you need an RLF sign-off to fly there? I have no problem with a small LZ, but how does that square with launching H2s there?

Lets plan on meeting in the LZ at 1700 hrs. lol … 5 pm Fri Sat Sun if you choose to stay longer.

VERY FAMILY FRIENDLY
Camping in Lz
Food 10 mins from LZ
Bring lots of water
No need to bring fire wood .. there is a lot of down trees.
Bug juice, lots of Mosquitos
Bring your fishing poles .. the best trout stream fishing in the state ..

Spare down tubes if you have them …. No really ! Please take a look at Hat creek landings on you tube .. they can get tricky … the Lz is huge but demands respect …

Spread the word let us get sum sweet air !

From

Bay area it takes 5 hours … plan accordingly please

I will be leaving the Modesto area before 12pm. I have room for two wings and two bodies.

The main LZ at Hat Creek is considerably bigger than at Ed Levin. Big and flat, with a windsock in the middle. It's surrounded by trees that can swirl the air around a bit. The LZ can also be pretty thermic until it's in shadow.

Give that Hat Creek is a late-day glassoff site, many pilots will simply fly until the LZ is in shadow, which significantly cuts down inconsistant air movement.

I have no idea what the RLF notation is about - H2's have been safely flying Hat Creek for a long time.

It's a place where many H2s build airtime towards their H3. A great late day site for most H2s. Just stay away from the LZ until the trees shadow it. The wind usually calms down as the sun sets thumbsup

PostPosted: Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:55 pm    Post subject: Hat Creek Rim Site Protocol Reply with quote #19
It would be much appreciated if everyone planning on visiting/flying Hat Creek Rim were to familiarize yourself with the site particulars. Starting here helps put things in perspective; http://www.hatcreek.info/index.htm.

Hat Creek Rim is a USHPA insured site and operates under a Forest Service Special Use Permit. There is no cost to follow site protocol - following site protocol keeps us in good standing with the USHPA (who provide the required site insurance). The Forest Service likewise appreciates our efforts and the benefits of having pilots follow site protocol.

Thanks,

Phil
