#1 |
38-year-old man from Hope, B.C., is in critical condition after being injured in a hang-gliding accident just outside of Lumby B.C. on Monday.
Witnesses say the man was approaching for a landing just before 2 p.m. PT when he stalled the glider and one wing touched the ground, sending it into a cartwheel motion.
The man, whose name has not been released, hit ground with full force.
He was flown to a Kelowna hospital where he remains in critical condition in intensive care.

....a really nice guy...volunteering for our recent fly-in, who never stopped working; chopping wood in the rain into the night, helping with aircraft, preparing the stage for entertainers, building an awesome bonfire.. a non-drinker, he kept a sane head during our festivities.
probably abit early to know exactly what went wrong. my flight on friday turned my hair white, super rough air between 100'-500', but I don't know the conditions during his flight.
this is the only such event in over 35 years of hg activitys in this valley. I can only guess at the heartache in the community, and send everyone my love, take care..

Thoughts and prayers are sent. Yeah, those cartwheels can be a real bummer. _________________ H-4 (1976) UP Saturn 147 & UP Axis 13

That is unfortunate.
Too bad they had to state "In Canada, hang gliding is largely self-regulated. The federal government doesn't require training for pilots, and pilots do no need to hold a licence or permit to operate the aircraft. In Canada, hang gliding is largely self-regulated. The federal government doesn't require training for pilots, and pilots do no need to hold a licence or permit to operate the aircraft. "
This gives the impression that we are a bunch of unsupervised old teenagers riding shopping carts down a steep hill. _________________ Mountains always have the right of way.

I know everyone is concerned, thank you; at this point, I think it may be tactful to not mention his name, yet.
last I heard, they were still trying to contact his family. he was staying in the valley near the lz. I might mention he seemed saftey- aware, with no inclination to fly in the conditions we had when I was there, having all season to fly.. |

Is that his glider pictured in the news report? I wonder why a H2 would be flying a Predator.
Prayers and thoughts for his speedy and complete recovery.

Come on, who doesn't know about the Oz report?
As the guy is seriously injured, it might help contacting friends or family knowing who he was. _________________ Mountains always have the right of way.

I gave you the option of learning the name if that's what you want. I also point out that it has already been exclusively reported. _________________ Davis Straub at the Oz Report |

I for one was glad to know I could look up the pilot's identity if I chose. Every now and then I will read an accident or fatality report and it turns out that I knew the pilot or his/her family. A little bit of moral support from the community can have a huge impact on a pilot's recovery from injury. |

Damn......
.As A child...
In tall grass I used to lie,
with gaze directed to the sky.
The white wispy clouds of white,
their forms would change before my sight.
The breeze so soft upon my skin,
as hopes and aspirations would begin.
Then the silence broken,as if on cue,
and the small light plane came into view.
The performance was always at it's best,
atop the clouds it seemed to rest,
to gaze below,as if to say,
"I guess no one is watching today."
I often wondered who they are,
where they were going, and just how far,
and as it disappeared from sight,
my mind would wonder with delight.
and now as half my life is through,
the wonders and the questions,"who"
are answered as I gaze below,
and see that no one really knows.....
who I am.
Poem written by my powered flight instructor Lawanna Clark in 1989.
June 12,1997 I earned my private ticket with her help.
She died in an air crash March 11,1998.
I miss her so much.
My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of all fallen pilots. _________________ "We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."
