i am thinking of getting a 6030 flytec vario so that i can have everything i need in one instrument,
with that said why do pilots have both a 6030 with a built iin gps and 76 series garmin, i have seen that combo a lot, when the 6030 has a gps built into it ?
i understand if you want to save money, you would want to go to a combo because the price of two instruments are much cheaper then a 6030, _________________ Explore nature from the eyes of an Eagle |

76s has maps, makes it much easier to find roads, or radio your driver and tell them where you are.
Also, in competition, a second GPS is cheap insurance in case your first one dies or loses signal for a few minutes and there's a gap in your track log... _________________ Ryan Voight

Just out of curiousity why not the 6015? The 6030 has a bigger screen and a lot more comp stuff that I would never be interested in. At twice the price it was hard for me justify the cost.
For the record I did buy the 6015 mostly I wanted the gps and wind direction. I hope to do more flying this year where the 6015 can be useful. At least more than just beep and boop.

That's exactly why I haven't bought a new vario for a number of years. Until they come out with a vario with moving map GPS, there's nothing the latest varios offer that this non-comp pilot can't get with his current vario/GPS combo.
Moving map GPS is terrific for open-distance XC flight. I won't do without it.

do you like its gps Quality ? one of the reasons i want the 6030 is for the wind direction as well and it comes with pitot tube so it can be more accurate when it comes to wind and ground variations one other feature i like on the 6030 is the speeds to fly,but most pilots say they don't use them any way, tell me about how the 6015 is working for you i love the fact you can get a wind direction reading on it _________________ Explore nature from the eyes of an Eagle |

I only flown with it twice. It was a nice surprise to be able to fly last weekend. I did not think the weather was going to coorporate. I barely read the manual. I read enough to figure out how to turn the vario on. I have yet to download the latest software. I will probably do that this weekend.
The only thing that I can say so far is that I like how it shows the last direction of the thermal and yes the wind direction. Oh and the averager seems to be easier to read at a glance. I had the baurginger which showed +/- 1,2,3 etc. The tone is a little different than I am used to but I can adjust that.
Monday was an iffy day at Mission with the LZ showing south in the LZ. If you knew Mission you would know it is NOT a desirable direction to land in. It is not a terrible thing just not normal. I launched knowing that I may have to land going south. There were only 3 of us and two had to land going south.
The cool part was during my flight I noted the wind direction change in the 6015 showing the 'normal' direction for the wind. I looked at the LZ windsock sure enough it it lined perfectly. I got to land in the normal direction.
The speed to fly seems like it can be a useful tool. Not sure how user friendly it is to use in the air. I usually glance at my unit for the altitude and avg'er.
I did not get the airspeed indicator maybe later I might changed my mind. For now this vario has more bells and whistle than i will know what to do with. It does have a ground speed that I was also able to read at a glance.
Note: If you include the airspeed indicator and mount then the 6015 is not quite half the price as the 6030. SInce on the 6030 that is standard. Still the price and the extra function for flying comp just did not seem desirable to ME.
A new toy to play with hopefully I will get to use it to its potential.
