The recreation class is for pilots who have not yet had a flight greater than 75 miles... I believe the Rec. Class numbers are straight up miles, best 4 of 6 days. While the Open Class numbers are adjusted for the type of glider being flown, Rigid, topless, kingpost, single surface.

Rec class and open class have bonus LZ's. For example May airport is a bonus LZ, so is Willow creek and Henry's Lake airport... The straight up miles and no handicap in the open class is for the National open distance champion points race. Hat's off to Joe Evans for placing 8th on a single surface Freedom! _________________ Blaine, President Idaho Hang Gliding Association

Glad to finally see the results and congrats to the winners, organizers and particpants.
I drove through the valley during the comp (going from CA to MT), but unfortunately it was at night.

Hell yeah! Congrats NMErider...Top 5 Open class in your first comp. Nice work man. I wonder how much you gave up over the course of the comp by taking video and pictures? Thanks for sharing by the way.
Cheers! |

It wasn't worth taking somebody else's place ahead of me to sacrifice shooting what you should be seeing later today. And that will only be 1/3 of my flight videos. I'm not the only pilot who could have done better by not enjoying the pleasure of other pilot's company or engaging in extracurricular activities so I could have just as easily gotten bumped lower too. Whoever said this is like summer camp for hang gliding comps really wasn't kidding. As you can see I was only 2/10th of 1% behind Mike Daily in 3rd place and Scott Huber in 4th. http://www.flykingmountain.com/contestresults.html#results2010 I prefer it this way.
I had the tremendous pleasure of duking it out both low and high in the sky in the sky on 2 different days with Mike on his exquisite flying Flight Designs Axxess rigid wing. That alone was worth the trip. I also battled it out with Joe Evens on his fantastic Freedom 170 in a tight and twisty thermal right in front of launch and over the heads of the rest of the pilots. I could go on and on but gotta run now.
Thanks, Jonathan |

Jonathon,
It was a pleasure flying withyou at King. Your launch timing reminded me of myself 20 yrs ago. Good job!
However, comp pilots have learned to never battle or duke it out until the end of the day. Instead, we cooperate fully and team fly with every nearby pilot. It is a big sky and it has been proven over and over that team flying always results in higher, faster, farther flights. Save the battle for later. Strangely, it's not uncommon to actually wait for your competitor when you get ahead, knowing that team flying on glide is twice as effective. Sooner or later you will most likely get separated even if you try to stay together. When I enter a really good core I flash my wings all around to to invite nearby flyers to help me track the best lift. How competitive you get at the end of the day depends many variables. If you team fly with every pilot that gets nearby, you might not need the extra miles to win the meet. It is quite possible to win the war without winning a single battle. Just land near whoever has the best beer.
That said, it is very cool to win a day.

I don't want to "out" anyone, but I wanted to offer a special congratulations to all the Torrey Hawks members who placed so highly (and lowly!!) in the meet.
Congratulations also to those who put on the meet, and to everyone who went out and flew. Good on all of ya!! _________________ Bob Kuczewski: H4/P4 - Torrey Hawks, CSS, SHGA, E-Team, Soboba Soaring, Founding Member of the HGAA

The Rec. Class is on the same handicap system as the open class, with deducts for topless and rigids and bonus for single surface.
It would be cool if we had enough rec. pilots up next year to have a separate award for the best "Rec. only" team. I would have liked to have done some team flying with someone at my level.
Cool hanging and flying with you again John. Can't wait till camp next year! _________________ Half the skill, twice the Ego - ACP
