A quick update as I did the first day last weekend.
I was hoping to get two or possibly three days done, however Sunday was wet and the wind picked up more than expected on Monday (bank holiday) - I alone got a flight and that was a total of about 2 metres - backwards! All with tethers, so did get a few minutes flight time hovering - and my first time lying prone, which was nice.
Luckily some friends were having a BBQ close by for the 'may day' motorbike stuff in Hastings, so I headed over to that, were I was offered free food in exchange for cooking it!
It was south downs hang gliding I went with.
The first day there was one other person and I flying - two instructors meant one of us was holding the tether while the other one was flying.
We got through the basics and I seemed to be getting a hang of the simple stuff we were doing fairly well, though still needing to be shouted at occasionally!
While south downs hang gliding isn't the most shiny/polished of operations, I have to say it has that genuine enthusiasm that I would take any time over the over-the-top sales pitch that I constantly got when I went to airkix indoor skydiving recently. The guys were friendly and interested in the sport. |

you say south downs isnt the polished /shiniest of operations, but thats UK hang gliding schools for you ! They're all like that so dont worry.. they run on a small budget. The only exception i've seen to this is airways, but thats a different matter entirely as its an actual flight park. _________________ The best 'thermals' are to be found over poorly maintained helium factories. |

Hi G,
Glad you went with South Downs (say Hi to John and Matt, I'm sure that's who you were with). It's been a little windy of late, but glad you got on the tethers - I think it's a real nice introduction to what will come a little later!
Enjoy and keep us posted! _________________

I'm hoping to be out with John one day this coming weekend. I'm CP already, but I haven't Hill-flown for a while & am going back for a tune-up of my launch technique. might see you then if you're out again this weekend - look for a bloke with long hair (who isn't Matt)

I'm going to be getting going with Airways Airsports this year, tandem aero-tow, cant beat flying with Judy Leden right next to you!
I think it's the fastest and best way to get as far along as possible, even if it is a 170 mile drive...

As I say, I prefer 'real' people, rather than those that are forced to try and up-sell to you constantly because of rigid company policy!
Andy - I've just re-booked my second day for this coming Sunday, so might see you there! |

you'll either get judy or andy snell, as andy is doing just as much tandem training these days as judy... either way you can be sure of good training. _________________ The best 'thermals' are to be found over poorly maintained helium factories. |
