Lafe,

Pull a chair up to the Campfire, kick back, and be among friends.
Lots of good pilots launch and land here.

Thanks y'all,
Don't mean to mis-represent myself, acutally born and bred in Topeka, Kansas, (famous for NOT being a slope gliding state. ie relatively flat (not as flat as florida or illinois though!)) migrated to Oz in 2001 after a couple of stints enlisted in Uncle Sams Miguided Children and now call Aus home cause this is where my wife and kids and life is.
Thank you again, and hopefully I'll have something worth contributing in the near future, cheers, lafe <back to lurking>

Hey All, time for me to get a new wing. I'll be selling my Discus 14 short pack with under 40 hours on it and recent annual and new flying wires. Check out the Classifieds:)

And people like me, not so good!
Tamworth! Have you been to Manilla yet?
Tony Barton puts on a thermalling course there Spring and Autumn school holidays. http://www.air-sports.com.au/ Click on "News and Events"
I can highly recommend them (weather permitting).
Next one is 14-16th of April.
You'll like him (everyone likes him). He's another damn Yank come over here and stolen our wimmin folk. My advice to any Aussie is get a girl quick before some charming American Hang Glider pilot comes and steals them all away!
90% of the fun is listening to his stories round the campfire every night.
Cheers Jason =:)

Hey Jason,
Your correct, he is a very humble and funny fella and incredible pilot, Tony is my instructor, just finished solo sign off last week. have about a whole 2 hours of air time and a ton of takeoffs (and landings/crashes) still high as a kite ya know? I don't know if I'm going to be setup, (finances) by Aprils course. I've stopped by Borah for the NSW State titles last month, which was the convincing argument. I told myself I just gotta try that so I took BillOs advice and called Tony and here I am. But I'll be dropping in during the course (half an hour away), hoping I can pickup something useful and they don't shoo me away!.
Thanks and look forward to meeting ya.
cheers,
lafe

Hey Jason, caught up with Tony this week in Manilla for three days of his thermalling course.
caught my first thermal and it was awesome, well, truth be told it helps having a radio tuned into Tonys and he says cryptic things like "hey head over to that tree line, go at best glide and aim for the windmill" and like magic the vario starts screaming at ya [count to three, 1...2..3 turn] and the ground gets fuzzy and the butterflies in my stomach turn into a small hornets nest whooa! awesome. anyway, thanks for the advice.
first day basically was a landing in that bombout on the west side:(
2nd: launch from west and then landed on airstrip at Godfreys
3rd day: south launch in the saddle in nil/light wind and landed at manilla caravan park. only down thing was, my landing was a bit hard, came in a bit high in nil wind or a bit cross wind and I couldn't run it out and the powerlines were coming at me so I tried to flare too late and nose dived in..nothing serious, a little bend in the base bar and a pretty wicked burn from a stay on my left shoulder, a bit to contemplate now...back to practicing landings.
on reflection my approach was too high and maybe a bit too fast andi know I can work on that. Tony said not to let a hard landing take away from all the great things in a flight.
until later.
lafe sends.
did get a photo, let me see if I can get this up there,
img00171 is view from about 6500 ASL looking S-SW towards tamworth and keepit dam can be seen shimmering in distance to the right.
clouds were above 8 or 9000 feet best I made was about 7600. kinda cold up there, I didn't dress accordingly.
img00172 is looking toward manilla at top of photo from 6500, the landing site is across the river just above the large green oval at top of photo.
none of these were taken with any deliberation, I grabbed my camera in a lull in the excitement in a thermal and snapped a couple and then tucked it back in a pocket to concentrate on getting higher.

A problem I run into far too often, forgetting bar mitts, or leaving them because I don't think it will be any good,
Leaving a heavy jacket because I think it will be hot in the LZ, and I won't get that high.....
Then one time I found myself at 11.3k at -7.7 C, with basically just a sweatshirt on.... brrrrr
Then my first flight here in Switzerland (duh, Switzerland is regarded as cold), I don't get as high, but I do get colder: -8.3 C, at least I had an appropriate jacket (actually, 2 of them!) on, but no bar mitts.... my hands were freezing.
learn a good habit now, always be prepared for a good flight, always be prepared for a high flight, and thus, always be prepared for a *cold* flight.
I've got a bad habit about underestimating how much clothing I'll need, and not wearing extra in case I underestimated.

on first day of XC course I was rugged up, gloves, jumper long pants, the lot, not a chance of getting cold, and you know how that kind of preparation was rewarded with? a short sweaty bomb out. but at least the landing was ok.
Ha, so by having a T-shirt and no gloves I assured my self of getting cold.
Cold in this part of Oz is not like Alpine cold.
I think gloves early in training made it more difficult to feel pressures on the bar. so I don't regret not wearing gloves, in future, tucking the gloves in the harness for easy access after launch and safe elevation will be a pre flight check item.
