How sad.
I hope Whitewater is able to get its operation going again pending the completion of the FAA matters. |

Oh jeez this is terrible. This is the Roy that just got his hang 2 and soloed at whitewater 2 weeks ago? That's tragic.
My condolences to Roy's family and the Whitewater HG community, whom I haven't seen in a decade or so. |

| Having met Roy during his training toward soloing, all i can say is that he was always happy to make the trek to Whitewater regardless of the weather predictions. Roy would show up during the worst weather to wait out the conditions till the nill wind appeared. He was truly happyest just coming to Whitewater and hang waiting. He expressed joy on every visit and after every flight. He will truly be missed. Tommorrow we will bbque, and toast his love for the sport. Fly safe everyone..Regards from Wisconsin. Chico |

This is incredibly tragic. Does anyone know any details of the incident? Was he on tow? Lockout? On approach? Downwind?
Is there anything to learn to help avoid this for other new pilots? |

Rick,
I just posted this on the other thread about Roy. It's from the WWHGC website:
--------------
Today is a very sad day for WWHGC members. Our good friend and fellow pilot Roy Messing passed away this afternoon as a result of a hang gliding accident this past Monday. Roy had released after entering into a mild lock-out but did not regain control in time to set up for a proper landing.
Roy's family commented about how much he was enjoying his retirement now that he'd found hang gliding and all his new hang gliding friends at WW. Roy loved to fly and if you fly at WW you surely know that.
We will all miss you Roy, and your kind, helpful presence at the airport. It's your turn to soar in the best lift now buddy! Have a good one!

I agree on the need for an accident report. The tragedy is only worse if we don't learn from it.

The above brief explanation brings up more questions than it answers. Such as:
How high was Roy when this happened? It would seem that from a "mild" lock-out, with sufficient altitude, a pilot should be able to recover.
Certainly pilot skill can make a difference in such a situation.
Also, wind speed could have effected things - in that a stronger wind would have made an attempted down wind landing a dangerous event.
Time of day can even play a part. Was this tow being done in the morning or evening? Or was it a mid day tow (possible thermal turbulence)?. _________________ WW 141 Fusion SP
