Yeah! Nice to see Merewether again in that video. Last week I was there for a whole afternoon watching some student pilots solo soaring and getting a short tandem as part of my course. Hopefully a solo for me there soon _________________ N.B. If there is an ad immediately below here, it is completely random and not associated with me, or endorsed by me, in any way whatsoever
That was a nice piece on our favorite sport! Kind of like the beginning of "Endless Summer".
Question - I've heard mention of Ralf TV and just Googled it. But I get no direct hits. So, what the heck is "Ralf . . . .
Never mind. I was spelling Ralph the wrong way.
PS - What's the web address for Ralph TV? I'm getting something with a "ninemsn" frame around the page? _________________ WW 141 Fusion SP

Raplh is a 'mens' mag here Ralph TV was a short lived weekend TV version of the mag, but really just an advertising piece. Only AP's piece was ever worth a look. Nine MSN would be the likely place to see the web version, Nine being the TV channel here that showed the program NineMSN is the internet side arm... _________________ TEX

That is so bloody embarassing. Man, I cringe every time I see it, in fact I saw it once and was so revolted I can't bring myself to see it again.
The first question they asked me when starting the interview was "So, yeah, ha ha, how does it feel to do a sport where there is a good chance to kill yourself" I'm standing there thinking 'oh great, here we go again'. I explained to the interviewer we are not brainless meat-heads with a death-wish, and if you had to catagorize HG it would be more accurate to call it an art form where precision is key, or like airborne 3D chess, rather than a sport like football or table tennis. These answers were not what they were after, understandably, the target audience is 18-25yr olds. In the end they were suggesting what I should say before actually asking and filming my answers. But the cameraman eventually came back the following season and learnt to fly so at least we know we converted one person. _________________ A ship in harbour is safe.

Adam, I noticed you seem ill at ease in the vignette and was curious about that since you don't strike me as someone who would be any different on text than in person or in front of a camera. Unlike the mensch who started this thread and writes likes a typical junior high school teeny bopper and comes off better than Henry Kissinger in person. Go figure?
Then there was the time back in Chicago around 1985 when I was a windsurfing instructor in Evanston, IL and a local news station did a feature on the budding sport on Lake Michigan. So, Mike Wiley, one of our most endearing members of the teaching crew is standing there in front of the camera with his arms clenched firmly behind his back and cringing something awful. tears were practically welling up in his eyes. Mind you, I was at home taping all this on the telly to play back a the sailing club. And Mike, through a voice ever so strained while desperately attempting to look at ease goes on to describe what is like to windsurf for the lovely newscaster. So the next day we all get together and before I show the tape, I say "Hey Mike. How come you looked like you had a load in your pants in front of the camera?"
Everyone gasps at my seemingly noman-esque callousness, when Mike exhorts, "I was practicing standing the board on edge before the camera crew arrived when I slipped and straddled the board. I was holding an ice pack on my family jewels until they showed up, and after they left I just doubled over in pain."
See, Adam. Somebody here has to ask the tough questions!

The fire station didn't stop giving me curry about the whole thing and chipped in to buy the issue of Ralph. Needless to say they didn't seem to notice the hang gliding photos. I include the following photos to give an unbiased view of the contents of your standard Ralph magazine.
