I'd like to announce a website I created to help those with Flytec 5030/6020/6030 or Bräuniger IQ Compeo+/Competino+ varios.
The site is a Google Maps app that overlays various airspaces. At the moment there is data for North America, South America (Argentina and Brazil), most of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
You can use a selection tool on the map to select an area of the map you plan to fly then download a file with just that data. This file can then be uploaded to your supported vario using FlyChart.
This is a big improvement over the state level files I announced a month or so ago.
Let me know if you run into any issues or if there is no data for your neck of the woods. I've tested this with a limited number of browsers. If you are having an issue please let me know what operating system (Windows XP, Vista, Linux, etc.) and browser and version. If you are using Firefox 3 upgrade to beta 5 for better performance dragging around the selection area (SVG support is in place in beta 5).
Oh yeah - the URL:

Enjoy. _________________ Rick

Rick, awesome job man! I love intelligent yet novel uses of existing data and technology like this. What is your source data for the airspace information?
Cool man! |

I'm using the data from http://www.lloydbailey.net/airspace.html
I downloaded a bunch of different countries then massaged the data a bit. The data from this website comes from yet another site and source of data. The data is a few years old. The FAA doesn't make it easy to get the latest US data anymore. It used to be free and open. Now you have to subscribe and pay.
But for our uses the data should be good enough more most people. These airspaces don't change very often.
Enjoy. _________________ Rick

Has anyone used this tool with IE7? I have had one report of issues with IE7 but I have no access to that browser to test it. I'd like to know if others are seeing any issues selecting a map region with IE7.
Thanks. _________________ Rick

Rick,
I'm on IE 7 and Windows XP SP2 and I had no trouble selecting a map area and opening the KML file for the Chattanooga.area. Picked two more areas at random and function appeared normal. |

Great - thanks for the test Michael. Since that was your first post you need to start a new "introduce yourself" thread. Let us know who and where you are, what your flying experience is, etc. Welcome. _________________ Rick

Michael Bradford, old guy now in NW Georgia. Flying since 1970. USUA #3.
Resurrected to hang gliding in 2004; AT H2 Falcon 2 170.
Hardly worth a thread... more like Mister Ed. |

This took longer than I planned but it's ready. I have reworked the application. Here are the changes:
* All new data with FAR fewer segments
* You can now filter the downloaded data for all the different airspace classes (A-G,P,Q,R,W,GP, and CTR). The display won't change but the downloaded data will only contain the selected types.
* Links with lots of additional info about CTRs, elements, and the various varios.
* Info about the country data including date of data and source of data.
* Completely redid the color coding. Each country now uses it's own color coding for each airspace class. The colors used are the ones specified in supplied data for the country. If no specific colors were specified then I just used some defaults. The USA data is still drawn using standard sectional formatting. All of this only applies to the display on this application. The downloaded data will have no color coding.
All of the new data is more up to date than before. The USA data is 100% up to date as of today. But there is less countries now than before since it is harder to find good data for a lot of countries.
So give it a try and let me know of any issues.
There were comments about some old data (like for Norway and England) being all wrong. Let me know if the new data looks better. I'm using the latest data I can find.
If your country shows no data, let me know and I'll see what I can do to add it.
Enjoy. _________________ Rick

| Darn. The right half of the instructions are hidden by the map and I don't see an OpenAir button anywhere. I'm using IE7. |

I finally got around to updating the USA airspace data. For those of you flying around San Bernardino, you can now see the new Class D airspace and download the updated data.
