for me Its not religion as a topic. I would strongly defend slights on other issues (politics glider choice etc.)
I also understand that among most HGing pilots you will fine a higher percentage that are liberal, want the government to pay for their things, are not religious, not strongly patriotic and very PC.
So none of these discussions surprise me. But in the case of religion there are many different faiths and not too many go door to door with in your face pushing of a belief. This in fact bothers me. I don't care for Huckabee because he wears his faith a bit too strongly for the job he is seeking.
Its not a hot potato if discussed respectfully, politics is about issues and positions which has hopefully some rational to support a persons belief. As for Glider well there really isn't any discussion necessary here, its ATOS all the way

Patriotism is a memetic disease.

I find it sad that people feel the need to get angry and attack others because of their personal beliefs. I have respect for everyone here (and particular admiration for everyone's love of hang gliding) - it doesn't mean I agree with everything you all think and say, but surely people can disagree about things and be great friends at the same time.
Unfortunately a great many angry, disrespectful and violent things have been done in the name of "religion" and even of God - there would I'm sure be far less "angry atheists" if this wasn't the case. But these "religious" people are doing the exact opposite of what Jesus said to!
It's been great to see the posts here from atheists who are not ashamed to say that's what they are and at the same time say they do not mind people saying they believe in whatever God/religion. For the record, I trust Jesus with my life, but I say this in a completely non-confrontational way knowing I will not convince anyone else to believe the same by argument. I believe this is a perfectly reasonable thing to say in an environment of freedom of speech, and I believe anyone's answer to me simply stating my belief (angry or respectful disagreement, or maybe even agreement?) will reveal more about them than me.
Love to all (and peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, humility and self-control).

I prefer :
Description : The New Testament encourages answering questions with other questions as a means of facilitating conversations. So what better way to fully understand what Jesus would do, than by inquiring what he wouldn't do?

well this is obviously a very passionate topic for me, as well as others here. I could keep going for days, but as others have pointed out, this may not be the place. So in the interest of the hang gliding community I will discontinue my participation in this thread.
I guess its just nice to have something to discuss that we don't all agree on. Since we all love hang gliding, the discussions are usually one dimensional.
...maybe I have spent too much time in college?
........maybe I need to get more flying in (damn Santa Ana winds! )

When I think of patrioism I think of owing my freedom to the youngsters that were on Omaha beach. Is that who you want to tell about this disease concept of yours Tom?

I don't believe in God............I believe in Me...............so that makes me a God.
But I don't believe in God............So that means I don't believe in Me.
It's tough being human................Lets go fly.
I've got a song I ain't got no melody
How'm I gonna sing it with my friends
I've got a song I ain't got no melody
How'm I gonna sing it with my friends
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
I've got a lil' story ain't got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while
I've got a lil' story ain't got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
I've got a lil' dance ain't got no steps
I'm gonna let the music move me around

The odd thing is, Dennis, in most every war, both sides are generally comprised of patriots. The winner then claims they were the real patriots, the other guys were the bad guys. Been going on since, ohhhh, the dawn of man. Tom's point is on the meta level, that is, on level of the analytical perspective towards what war is, as opposed to an actual denigration of a specific country's patriots. Or at least that is how I read it....

My point is its easy to talk about that "Meta" level but I never said everyone had to be patriotic, I didn't say they were diseased if they were not. But I will respond when someone wants to take a shot at me or my country. I don't agree with everything my country does and don't agree with many of my countrymen but that never clouds my loyalty and appreciation of those who keep my ass safe.
I don't know if you were born on the Island or traveled there years back. I have never been on that Caribbean Island but i have been on others. They are beautiful and a gentle life i would think. That is a good deal of evil out there and i think someone looks after St Croix, if just to keep it safe.

Wow, I go skiing for the day and my silly little post has grown a bit. I'm very happy to see it has basically been civil - kudos to all that have replied.
I certainly was not trying to start any sort of religious war and I am glad none has ensued. Like I said earlier, I was posting what I found to be an interesting parallel, as an atheist, between my wanting to spread the word of hang gliding and how a religious person (not all of course) might want to share their passion for their belief. Again, this wasn't meant to be negative on either side and if anyone took it that way I apologize.
I'm glad that we, as a hang gliding community, can agree to disagree about such a topic but still do it with respect and still be friends (even if most us of haven't met face to face).
On the lighter side I had a wonderful day skiing with my 6 year old son. I'm so happy that he has a genuine desire to ski. As an avid skier myself, this will be a wonderful, albeit expensive, way to stay close.
Good night everyone.
