Many thanks Rob!
I have already seen these, but now that you mention skipping the ITS, I have a question.
On the flow chart it says
| Quote: |
NOTE
Highly skilled pilots with instructor experience may go directly to the
Instructor Evaluation. However, if they fail to pass the evaluation they must
complete an ITS before seeking another Instructor evaluation |
Does this mean if I can pass the evaluation, I can skip the Seminar, or are there requirements that define "Highly Skilled" and "instructor experience"?
Following those lines, what should I expect during the Evaluation?
TomGalvin, since you just went through all of this, anything bits of knowledge you can think of? Same goes for you other instructors, hgflyer, Red, Wingspan, Mr Voight.......etc...etc... any information is welcomed!!

| I went through the ITS with Paul Voight. Jimmy D, Lancelot, and GottaFly were in the seminar with me. I highly recommend it. Check the link Rob provided or contact Paul. He will travel to run the seminar if there are enough people interested.

Rob, Ive got a question. What about the requirement for logged hours? I stopped logging my flights long ago, and have long since lost my old log books.
Can I get in on my good looks alone?

I think if you are still alive with the scary gliders you've flown, Rad, you've met the requirements.

Thanks to Wikipedia I now know what squawk 7500 means.
But I'm not sure what the reference to hijacking is for - I was seriously interested in finding out if I could qualify for an instructor rating.

"Highly Skilled" and "instructor experience" are not specifically defined. Let's say a new H3 has had exposure to a good training program when he was learning and it's fresh in his mind, and let's also say he has had a lot of teaching background or has a natural ability to organize a lesson plan and to communicate. He may want to simply ask to be evaluated.
I believe one of the most important parts of teaching is evaluation. Not being evaluated but rather evaluating a student. To me it's the skill that's the hardest to develop and the most important in the longterm safety of one's students. It takes a lot of experience to do this. For example, we teach in my area with a fair amount of bunny hill and some tandems from a mountain and eventualy there comes the big step... the first mountain solo. How good does a student need to be to take this next leap? So for this type of decisionmaking as an instructor,... may the force be with you.
I've seen comments that becoming an instructor has a lot of hoops and that the rating keeps expiring so why bother. Well considering the clinics are optional and "evaluation only" is an option it's not very hard to earn for those with the skills. And for the expiration thing, after you become an advanced instructor, you only need to teach 5 lessons a year and keep up your first aid card. Just email this proof to either your director or any Instructor Administrator and if they are willing to sign (they probably will) you are good to go for another 3 years. There's a good chance this recert can then be done by mail to get the signature.
Oh, and Rad, about lost (log) books and good looks. You are lucky. In my case as I get older it's the other way around,.. lost looks, and good books.

Hi Craig,
Well I would be happy to do an evaluation. Seems I live a long way away from you (Ohio/Cali) so surely there is someone closer to you. But if it were me, I would imagine something as follows.
The evaluation will start with some long distance dialogue between us and then we have to get together in one place for a bit. The get together would probably be a day or two. Longer if waiting on weather. My preference is to do it in my area. But even that decision would be affected by the training arrangement you have in your area. If it is so different than what I would be able to test you at here then you coming here may not be best. I want to conduct a testing that is relevant to how you will be teaching.
I would do some homework ahead of time as well like asking Bo how you were in earning the Intermediate rating a year ago. And maybe I should find out from your local director if they have had any issues. Just letting you know because I don't want to appear like I'm going behind your back. Just trying to find out who you are. Relax, nobody expects you to walk on water. I surely can't being as dense as I am.
Finally when we get together there would be some written testing and practical testing.
I'll PM my cell# to continue to talk about it if you like.
rob
If you are serious we should probably take this off the forum and do it with phone calls or personal emails.
