i am not about how many miles we go during a XC, but the views you get along the way. it was awesome flying with Shadd and watching him fly his new T2C, with such passion and Skill, Shadd is not out just for himself and wants to share his love of XC and hang gliding with others, he works hard teaching others, i have seen him sacrifice flights so others get the thrill, he is surprised that others want to rally around him and want to fly with him all the time, the answer is because they will learn something and bond with his great sense of humor and Passion he has for life.
Shadd and i knew that the challenge of the day was crossing from the Wellington range to the short divide, a ten mile glide with little chance of getting a thermal, shortly after coming across Wellington range i hit the deck as i looked above i could see Shadd skied out, i heard over the radio maybe i will land with you for an easy retrieve, he heard back Shadd you are high go for it, i looked in amazement as i watched him cross and reached the short divide and catch his next thermal that would send him to the next state.
he apologized the whole time, i am sorry i made you come get me farther, don't ever think that way Shadd i would have been glad to go as far as needed
thanks for taking the time to share with me your knowledge, you are an amazing friend, those that know you would agree,
you are amazing at anything you set your heart out to do, i am so glad you have the glider that matches your needs, it was very inspiring to watch you fly THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY ! i wouldn't have gone for it if it had not been for you, i would have stayed in my fish bowl ,what an amazing experience ! _________________ Explore nature from the eyes of an Eagle |

That is it! I am getting sick of hearing all these great flight reports from Utah! Somebody tell me where there is a job opening in operations for a general contractor, subcontractor or construction related firm in Utah so I can get away from the east coast and get back to some good living! Seriously!!!
Congratulations on the flight Shad! _________________ Wills Wing U2 160

My buddy/instructor Tom W Graduated from William and Mary after growing up on the OBX and moved to POTM, and has never left since......
(sounds like a similar progression to yours)
If I was not so hooked on surfing, I would move back to SLC Utah in a heartbeat... _________________ Help preserve Hang Gliding at Torrey Pines

Cal, I'm starting to take a serious look at job opportunities out your way. I've been getting a little down thinking I may have to settle for a job here in the east and give up a bit of flying. It's one of the only things that keeps me happy, so I would love to take advantage of establishing myself in an awesome flying/skiing community out west! I'm going to keep up my search and will let you guys know if I can get any leads to make this happen!! _________________ U2 145

| Shadd, I have often thought of that possibility - linking up the Short Divide route with a start at willard. Good job! Is there a discription of your flight posted somewhere? Don't be shy man! |

launched at Willard, Shadd and i worked it up to close to 12,000 it has been known to be stronger lift at Ben lomand so i went South was able to work it a little higher but lost altitude getting back to the house thermal worked it up to about 11,500 and radioed to Shadd headed to Brigham City microwaves where we made the 10 mile glide without any lift till we hit the microwave towers house thermal ,once there the wellington range was popping thermals all the way till we hit the flats, i was so excited and there was so much lift along the range that i wasn't working the thermals high enough, while Shadd was skying out as he went with plenty of altitude to reach the Short divide, hit the house thermal there and went on to Idaho, i hit the deck on the flats crossed the river with hope to hit a thermal ,after realizing there was no lift on the flats turned 180 crossed the river again so i would be close to the road, the trick is to stay high on the Wellington range with enough altitude for the 12 mile glide to the short divide _________________ Explore nature from the eyes of an Eagle |

If I was single, or if my wife had any interest at all, I would have relocated to Draper 2 years ago after my first visit. I was showing her houses for sale on the North Side for about 2 months after that trip!
It's not just the mountains... the community there is rich in warmth and camaraderie. Don't judge them all based on Cal's acerbic personality!
And then.... there are the mountains _________________ http://pjwings.blogspot.com/ |

Hi Craig,
This was a declared goal, Cal had been looking at the route for some time, so we scouted it out on google earth. Cal had flown from the Brigham City towers ...back in the day so he knew there was a good thermal source there... the problem was how to get from Willard to the BC towers. We did a little quick math...and the best way to get there, was to get to 12-14 and glide via the high line and be just as efficent as we could. So....we could not get that high......so we got as high as we could (11.8 for Cal 10. and we went for it And never looked back!
We flew a beeline for the BC towers, and sure enough when we got to the towers, there was Cal's house thermal...the same one that was there 30 years ago! Up we went, then just as Cal said the Wellintons(?) were going OFF !! Cal and I spent the next hour hop-scotching are way along that beautiful mountain range.
I got lucky and took a late day boomer to 12.5, got steamline and made a long flat land glide all the way to the short divide, got there a 1000 ft agl and a hawk showed me a nice little thermal that took me to the top of the divide, where I meet 3 pg pilots....said hi to them, and hauled ass down range, to land just short of our declared goal of Malad ID.
This was a great X/C route!, we didnt launch until after 3:00 pm, I think if we take off earlier on a little better day....we could make Pocetllo ID!
Come join the fun!!

Sweet flight Shaddo! I had the entire front right wheel come off of my Toyota truck coming down the pass there by Malad on the way back from a fishing trip to MT. I would love to get back there and fly with you guys. I need to visit my grandma in Bountiful this year, maybe I can hook up with you guys then for a little flying. _________________ Wills Wing U2 160
