I got a cool aerodynamic rack for my truck and would like some suggestion on what kind of padding I can use and not ruin the cool aerodynamic look. As you can see it does have a small rubber strip but I don't know if its enough, and also the bar is at an angle so the glider would be sitting on about an inch area, but I read that Wills Wing recommends at least a 4 inch area which sounds like an overkill to me but any suggestions would be appreciated. .

I would make a shape out of wood and maybe channel iron, or aluminum. connect a 1x4 to the top and pad it with outdoor carpet. (not the fake grass stuff)

Something to just set over the top of the rail while the glider is on it, but lifts off when you don't want it.

Or something similar.

There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. … Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties. ~~~Douglas Adams

Why would you think that a hang gliding manufacturer would not know what they are talking about? You need to decide which is more important, the "cool" look of the rack or a hang glider without dents and damage.

"CHassan" has the right idea. thumbsup
Unfortunately, your aerodynamic look will disappear once you put padding on.
Don't put padding on the rack, put the padding on the wing where it meets the rack.

My SUV has the factory racks, plus a pair of extra wide Yakima racks. The Yakimas are heavily padded and attached using quick release mounts so they can be taken off when not needed. This gives the best of both worlds: Good protection for hauling gliders and lower wind noise the rest of the time. The factory racks are left on because they occasionally come in handy for hauling stuff that won't fit inside the vehicle.

How about just making the padding removable, velcro or such. Nothing looks aerodynamic about a huge bag on top of your car anyways Smile

I'd dissect a 3" lime-green ( grey if you can find it ) pool noodle, length-wise and use the halves.

1000 denier cordura cover. 16 gauge metal base riveted to round bar with 1" x 4" padding.
No rack rash.

The absolute best padding that money can buy is rubber coated water ski belt. I'm talking about the old style. Take it from a fragle rigid wing owner. You can find them on Ebay or buy new.

As a fellow rigid pilot, I use a similar setup. I've got two extra-thick pool noodles, cut to length, with a bungee running through them. I use them any time I'm setting up or breaking down on less than nice pillowy grass. They keep my in-bag wing a few inches off the rocky ground.

Back to racks - I just bought a new Tacoma 4-door 4x4 (the perfect HG rig, IMO) and am custom fabricating my dream rack. It will have the terrific padding of my current rack (similar to Wonder Boy's) plus the telescoping capacity to hold up to 4 rigid wings - and be easily removable. Photos to follow.

I stitched sleeves front & rear & middle just gets clipped around (copied Martin's work) for 1" x 4" Ethafoam pads that can removed & stored in the D cells. plastic adjustablle buckle on top to snug them up / remove.
Works great for setting up / breaking down to keep the carbon off the ground.

Very similar to the swimming belt.

Put a ladder on your fancy rack and put pipe insulation on the rungs.

I purchased the the Thule"wing bar" too for glidertransporting.

There is an original Thule spare part (Nr. 50521). Although it's for another purpose (I think surfboard or so), it fits exactly to the wingbar and may work good for transporting HGs also, because it's softer than the original small rubber.

slice up some pool noodles and use waterproof pvc insulation tape. neither cool nor aerodynamic, but highly functional and weatherproof
