Just got back from my first flight at IV for the season. God, what a beautiful place! It still looks like spring up there, even though it's more like summer here in the Bay Area. Nothing but heavily forested Sierra Mountains - some with snow caps - the lush alpine Indian Valley, full lakes, rivers and streams everywhere. Yowza!
There were seven of us flying yesterday. I was first to launch and gained over 3000' in the first 5 minutes of flight. A couple of minutes later I was at 10K and headed for Lake Almanor for the first leg of my 30-mile circuit.
It was really easy soaring, but I was in no hurry. I stopped and thermaled wherever I wanted, soaking in the spectacular beauty of the area. I made my way back to launch to see the last of the others piling off. Flying toward Taylorsville I got close to 11K at Evans Peak. Eventually, I completed the circuit then flew back toward Evans to join the others. Lift seemed to be slowing down a bit, but it was still easy to stay up.
After a couple hours. I was ready to land. Windlines on the various ponds told me which way to land in the valley, and the swaying grasses confirmed it as I got lower. The landing couldn't have been easier. My driver was waiting for me, and I broke down in the warm, mellow late-afternoon glow.
We went into Greenville and ate outside at Mountain Valley Pizza. At one point we looked up and spotted a nearby Bald Eagle circling overhead above the forest. Glorious.
I came home this morning, but some of the others are still up there - probably setting up their gliders right now. The forecasts look just as good for today as they did for yesterday.
I love IV!

Tom, it is in Indian Valley, northern cal. I have not been flying there since the late 70's, but if I remember right there is a number of launches surrounding the valley, like "Keddie ridge, to the south is a small burg called Quincy. I was introduced to the flying there by a pilot ,, Bill Battigan, "I might have spelled bills name wrong", Bill lived close to a wide spot in the road called Genesee or something like that. _________________ U.S.H.G.A. # 20275 |

Much of that is correct, but Keddie Ridge faces the town of Greenville in Indian Valley - not Quincy. Bill is still around; he owns an alternative energy shop in Taylorsville.
Indian Valley and Greenville are in Plumas County, at the far northern end of the Sierra Nevada range. Unlike a lot of other big-mountain HG sites, IV is terrific for family vacations because of all the other great activities and adventures in the area.
I've been flying IV consistently for about 18 years, and can count the number of sledders on one hand - it's been a long time since I didn't have a nice soaring flight there. Anyone who is traveling through NorCal should not miss a chance to fly IV.

Thanks for the further info RM, I'll try to contact Bill. I purchased my "Antares" from Him back in the 70's and because of one thing or another, "like got to get back for work" ,,, I have never taken the trip over there when I have been in Ca. to fly. _________________ U.S.H.G.A. # 20275 |

| Thanks again. Great soaring and other diversions. Problem is, after being in the air all day, does anyone have any energy left to do anything? Getting old stinks. |
