I knew someone would think a 5yo getting a tandem would be wrong but we let our son make the decision if he wanted to go. There was no pressure from me. At what age would a parent give a child a bb gun, a real gun, a dirt bike, or a bike for that matter and not give instruction or let the child have input as well as the parents determining if the child is ready? I know some adults that are not even ready for the responsibility of driving a car. Btw, the tandem pilot is head instructor at Quest and top comp pilot.

This video is a promotional video intended for general public and is not real high speed for pilots that have seen numerous videos.

Thanks for viewing though and your comment.

your choice is entirely your choice.. fair play. I have a small son myself and its no ones business to tell me how to bring him up.
Just to explain why i see this as risky though...
For me, the only problem i have with this kind of thing is that the childs decision is not informed. Children have no sense of self preservation, they have no concept of danger, they certainly have no concept of the potential risks when they get strapped in to a hang glider. You are making this decision for them. Despite the fact that the instructor is good, this is no different from giving your child to an experienced motorcyclist, putting him on the back, and letting him go down the freeway at 100mph. I woudlnt do that, even if it was me riding the bike.
Tandems go wrong.. so to me its an unnecessary risk. Kids are meant to be riding bikes, playing with friends, playnig football etc. I'm not sure why the need is there to take them up to 3000ft in a hang glider. This is surely for the enjoyment of the parent and not the child?

Anwyay, he looked happy and no harm done thumbsup I just wanted to explain why i made the comment.

Everything with kids is risk and reward as determined by the parent.

As a parent we decide, everyday, what is safe enough for our kids. We allow them and even make them do things that could kill them, but are "safe enough" in our mind.

I'll let my girls take a tandem, would have let them as soon as they could fit in the harness if they wanted to. At 14 I still won't let my oldest walk across the street to go to the mall!

Shoot guns, ride a dirt bike, bungee jump, ok just don't tell your mom. Go on a date, are you kidding?

There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. … Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties. ~~~Douglas Adams

To each's own. I had a friend that was killed along with his entire family by a head on collision in an auto. He also made the decision for his children when he put them in an auto and drove down the hwy with other autos coming at them (supposedly in the opposite lane) and beyond his control.

I had no influence on him going. We never push our child. He is my only son and I was 42yo at his birth. BTW, this was a training flight for him and he decides to continue training, it will be fine with me but I will have input prior to him doing a solo. In other words, it my take him 10 years of ground training as well as flight training before he takes a solo.
