Hey,
A Falcon is great and I have a 170. If you want a SS with little more glide, you might consider a Freedom (click on my downloads). I'm sure Matt would be glad to sell you one. Like everyone is is saying, fly that SS glider until you know it intimately. Then consider a move up to DS. However, I'd hang on to that SS glider.

Falcons are awesome no matter what they say. i put 70hrs on my falcon till i sold it and now I've got a sport2, to tell you the truth i feel like I'm progressing at a fairly fast pace. 70 hours only took 1 season (5 months of really good days)
Best advice is to climb the glider ladder step by step, remember you've got the rest of your life to do this, and even spending 1 or 2 seasons per glider upgrade isn't all that long after all.....

if you come across a used but good condition falcon (1,2,3) get it! I would rather get a new sport cus you'll keep that forever.
my route/plan
1. used falcon (bought, and sold)
2. new sport 2 (bought, and will keep)
3. used U2 (will sell to help pay for t2)
4. new T2 (will keep as 2nd glider)

When I was buying my first glider I had many people tell me to get a falcon instead. I'm so glad I got sport 2 tho, I would have been bored with falcon and knowing myself would be shopping for a DS 6 month after I would have it. Worked out fine - never even broke a downtube on it. Then again people are different, and I was a very quick learner and ambitious.

My first gider was a Pacific Airwave MarkIV and after about 25 hours I started flying a Moyes XS.....
That being said , based on the amount and type of actual flying you will be doing, IMO a single surface would be the way to go...
(I lived in Salt Lake City, Jason lived in California, you live in Atlanta...)

but that said there are gliders that I think are suitable for SOME students

1 day on condor, 1 flight on falcon 195, about 15 -20 hrs on a pulse, couple hrs on a Saturn, couple hrs on a sport 2, now on my U2.

Our typical hang gliding instruction program is not geared toward teaching the most valuable skill that you as a new pilot (and older pilots too) can have and that is knowing how to land. And I mean practicing and practicing and practicing until it is second nature. Combining scooter towing with a single surface glider gives you the chance to learn this vital skill.

| A Pulse or an Eagle should be OK as well, but I don't think either of them would get you much that a Falcon 3 wouldn't, at least at the speeds you'd normally fly. I have to think there's a good reason that Wills Wing discontinued the Eagle just before the Falcon 3 came out.

What about flying a Falcon did you find boring?

the main reason I wanted a ds is 'cause to penetrate (yes, I'm shallow)
I also liked how sexy they look.
now I'm flying a freedom 170, and pretty happy with it, really like the mylar sail and flip ribs, I kinda think its got some fine lines, but I try to stay on the ground if its looking too windy.

I am one among those that commited capital sin and purchased a DS as my first glider!
I trained on Falcons but purchased a brand new WW Sport2 155 as my first glider and I believed it was the best decision for me and my flying, However, I did it only after I received approval from my Instructor!!!
The only person that will honestly be able to measure the state of your flying is your INSTRUCTOR, another key element is the level of maturity of your decision making. Pretty much any H2 will be able to fly a Sport2, but one adventurous pilot might get in trouble in a hurry onboard it while a more paced and consious pilot might progress safely on it and the only one who can establish and make a difference for it is yourself.
One glider I believe is constanly overlooked as a good novice DS is the UP Saturn! I would take a Saturn over an Eagle any day, and that is just my personal opinion.

Jason did, a few posts back. Note that the three he mentioned are no longer manufactured, but the Northwing Horizon is probably similar.

A single surface glider is fun to fly.
I recommend that you pony up the money for a brand spank'n new falcon in whatever colors you want. I guarantee that you will love flying it for at least a couple of years.
