below is a (nameless ) pilot who flew i would say 1/2 to a 3/4 mile out to sea or maybe more?
below is a picture of how far i went, it was very lifty but i didn't want to get stuck on my single surface.

I didn't go out as far as the other pilot, but I did fly out a bit. Once you got past the lift from the mild shear it looked like I was on glide against the headwind. I turned back towards shore when I was still above the Westlake cliff and of course my L/D relative to the ground was large with the added tailwind.

| I flew out for a while because I was hoping to see some sea life, and I was curious about the line on the water that appeared to be formed by two different water masses. When I got out to the line it was more turbulent air. Maybe different temperature water, and therefore air mixing? Not a shear in my opinion, which is based on limited experience with that sort of thing. Anyone else know better what the line on the water is? My guess would be simple water depth causing different apparent water colors.

All I know is I had a friggin blast flying there that day with Joe and his Falcon going as far and past the dumps. That was the first time I have gone out that far. But the best flight of the day was when Terry wanted to go to Westlake, Dirty and Noman talked me into a last flight. By this time it was 6:30p.m.! I was tired but man was it worth it! Dirty and me were just passing the stables at least 150over the lower ridge with lift o plenty, we went on glide towards Westlake with Dirty on my left close enough for me to yell over to him to look at the view of the duskish look over San Fran and the cars on the highway just below us with their headlights on, the town is now lit up with lights as a slight misty fog begins to develop over the town to my left. The air is hands off smooth, Redeye is on just over 3/4 v.g. and is just cruising straight on course and like power steering. I look over back at Dirty, so wishing I had a video camera to capture this moment, and I yell laughingly " This is Fuking incredible!" I mean here we were, my buddy and me both cruising at a smooth steady pace across the sky over a city wing tip to wing tip close enough to be laughing and fist pumping at the memory of this flight and the journey to get to this point. And right at that moment, I point over in front of us. A single seagull decides to soar just in front of us, close enough for me to touch his tail feathers he sweeps left to right and back right in front of us all the way til we get to the church that is falling into the sea. He then broke off and went about his way banking over for one last look as he dove out of sight. Feels good to be totally burnt out the next day because you were flying the day before. I love this s***. Redeye made the trip even better.

The depth of water will make it appear a different shade. My guess here would be that the currents are carrying more of that expensive Cali real estate out to sea.

There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. … Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties. ~~~Douglas Adams |

Yepper, sand, possibly in the rip tide moving out to sea.
