Hmm... in starting this thread, I want to keep it positive (there's some rant in my blog post that I am going to link to) so I want to do this:

Let's call out and thank, here, the people that do the work behind flying.

I'm going to start with the easy and obvious, and I need not be the only one: thanks, SG, for this site. I have made friends and learned a lot through it... what two things could be more important.

As for that blog post, the rant portion comes from the fact that when you help, you have to realize that not everyone is an angel (I should include myself in that) and that it's best to tailor your personality type to the project at hand.

I am not patient in certain ways and so I have decided to aim at tight, targeted projects with with known actors involved, trying to maximize benefit for cost. Anyway, here are my thoughts on the subject of volunteerism and hang gliding: http://knumbknuts.blogspot.com/2009/10/volunteerism-and-hang-gliding-clubs.html

On another note, some of the pilots who are going to Ecuador are helping out the kids there. As a native Ecuadorian and hang glider pilot, I greatly appreciate what these guys are doing.

Oh,

And thanks Dan Fleming for buying, maintaining, and making the Dunlap LZ such a fun and welcoming place to fly.

If the offending (helmetless) pilot is a repeat offender, contact your RD (McKenzie)... have him contact Dave Broyles, USHPA Safety and training committee chair... he has the power to rescind ratings for things like this.

Our club is going through that process now, regarding a pilot who did not join the club or sign the waiver... then was doing aerobatics and had a very high-profile accident. Now that the flight park is a Salt Lake County park, things like this don't go unnoticed, and action must be taken...

And John, don't think your efforts go unnoticed. In my one visit to C-line this summer, you were an obvious pillar of the community there. Not to mention the delectable BBQ you so graciously provided for us thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup

Next time you make your way to the Point, I certainly owe ya one!

Easiest RD is Bob K, Rob McKenzie is not a RD (though he helps on national issues like the PG instructor's conference)

Good on you for doing the hard work of dealing with a troublemaker.

No worries, the helmet situation is a CF (we revoked the rule, who cares if you bust your dome, but had to put it back in for insurance). I appreciate the compliments, and now back on topic:

- whom would you like to thank, Ryan? (I'm guessing you have a lot of fodder for this question).

We certainly have a few guys stepping up to the plate here.

The coolest thing they did is do some manual work on the dirt road that has made it so much nicer to drive up on. They also clear out the waterbars and whatever else needs to be done.

They mow the weeds when it gets too tall, keep the spots in good shape and many more things that we are not aware of.

I would like to see them call a workparty but NO they go out on their own! They've gone so far as to rent a jack hammer w/the parks permission. The club does reimburse them. As long as they turn in an expense report.

THANK YOU! Phil, Stan and Karl!! I apologize if there are others helping you out that we do not know about.

For the RDs
Our club has a budget to help with some of the expense for the RD's but most do not ask.

For Funston there are a few guys stepping up to the plate to fix the club house. Repainting and rechalking it. thumbsup

OH goodness How can I forget about Steve R. He got a 5yr special use permit for Funston. mosh It did come at a cost but I think it will be well worth it. Included in the permit will be the Dan's memorial fly in. No more special permit for this event.

Steve has done so many things for all the clubs in the BA. It is pretty amazing he has to have THICK skin with some of these guys. Not to mention he was the Mission site committee for many years and WOR club prez before becoming involved with Funston.

It is hard we have so many little clubs. Wink

There are a lot of people out there that deserve credit . i love these type of threads , the challenging thing is not leaving anyone out . sad but true some times it really offends some that work so hard to serve and get left out . i hope that it does not get in the way of mentioning people and create fun feelings on this thread . so if anyone gets left out please do not get offended.

i know that what has been done here for me personally is of little importance and that the bigger issue here is the service people render on a much grander scale .

however i would like to thank all of you on this org. for the willingness to help me personally , knowing that you would help any fellow pilot as you did me . i have learned so much from all of you and feel great full to all of you . i would like to extend a challenge to you if you don't believe you have helped me PM me i will direct you to your post that helped me thumbsup

How 'bout the "Hook-In" concrete plaques built by Rebardan and spread to hell and gone by pilots visiting Andy Jackson Flight Park/Crestline from all over? Durable, artistic, and need I say it "to the point"! Good on ya Dan! And the road-clearing crew, and the weed whacker crew, and the storage box installation crew and the Windtalker crew, and the lawn mowing crew, and the weed pulling crew and the tractor operators, and the ones who pick up after other people and never get mentioned, and the people who give enough of themselves to be club officers. They all add up to be the only bunch of people I'm truly happy to hang out with, in the air or at the LZ. Joel
