Who has flown with one, or still has one? I'm interested in finding one.... _________________ Blaine

So according to the guy that invented it , he no longer has the schematic.
One of the links he does describe the circuit, and that the components are ancient.
Has anyone took the time to copy the circuit?
As he described it , it is not a complicated circuit.
Just a thermistor of sorts with a noise maker that is triggered by very low changes in temperature.
Might be fun to play with |

If someone could make one with a faster response time and have an adjustment for how much of a temperature change to beep / respond to ... |

If somebody has one lying around that I could borrow (maybe even a non-working one), I could probably reverse-engineer it and create a schematic, and if there was demand, create an updated version. _________________ H4 + various skills (only foot-launch so far)

I had one for 3 weeks in the 80's. I tried really hard to make it work for me. I concluded it didn't work for the numerous, but skinny thermals like we have in SoCal. The air is just too churned up to get any meaningful info out of the thing. I got my money back.

Some pilots took a year or so to learn how to use them.
It was more of listen for certain patterns that meant anything vs what to ignore for me. |

I don't use the snooper to thermal.
I listen to my snooper while I'm setting up to gauge how it correlates with launch cycles. Once ready for launch, I use it to pick when to launch. It will usually tell me there is a thermal coming well before the streamers and bushes start to move. More often than not, I can launch early in the cycle and hit the lift with sufficient clearance from the mountain to start my 360.
When I'm working a thermal, I tune out the snooper and listen to my vario.
Between thermals, I listen to the snooper. When the snooper is telling me there is warmer air, I am more likely to stay in the vicinity and see what my vario says. _________________ 'Spark

Here's the original review/ article that ran in the 1987 HG Magazine.
The original designer has offered the schematic to the snooper in hopes that some tech-e might make a new and improved one!

Wow, that is excellent news. Thanks Blaine!
I was talking to one of the guys that make the Ascent wristwatch a few weeks back, and suggested that the snooper function would be a great addition to their vario. _________________ 'Spark

To me an 'improved one' would also detect changes in humidity and small particles (dust, pollen, odors , etc)
in the things that you find in thermals that are less common in the air outside of thermals.? |
