Im pretty pissed off at what happened with NME here recently.
Part of the mission statement of this site states:
"To provide a friendly community for Hang Glider pilots to hang out and discuss hang gliding "
You can disagree with NME. Can have a heated CIVIL debate with NME. I even disagreed with NME on some stuff. But this crossed the line into simple harassment.
THIS IS NOT WHAT THIS SITE IS ABOUT.
I can seriously relate. I was aggressively harassed by a group of pilots when I was a new H3 because of a perceived high risk situation.
Let me tell you, IT CAN ABSOLUTELY RUIN THE SPORT OF HANG GLIDING FOR YOU. There was a time I didnt even want to fly anymore because of 100 nannys flaming me every day.
If I see people harassing anyone like this again, im going to ban them a lot earlier than I typically do. I like to give people 3 warnings and a lot of time to change their ways, but this is the last straw.
People need to feel free to share on this site, the good and the bad. If we attack people every time they post the bad, we miss out on a lot of things that can be learned. Especially the new pilots. In the future, other pilots will keep tight lipped as well. This situation really sucks.

I think effective moderation would include:
- pointing out the difference between harassing someone and communicating effectively
- demonstrating how a pompous, retaliatory post could be re-worded in a more encouraging, helpful, non-aggressive tone
- identifying clearly inappropriate behavior and offering alternatives
..before outright banning people.
HG pilots are maybe not the world's most articulate group of people. I thik a lot of times our 'abuse' of another pilot is less by intent and more the result of a simple communication skill deficiency.
Banning people when you perceive that they've crossed some arbitrary line will produce unintended consequences that are as damaging to this site as the behavior you're banning people for.
I'd rather see you select a few moderators based on their knowledge, communication skills and attitude and appoint them to help prod threads back in the right direction when they start going the wrong way.
Thanks for your efforts here, this site is a great resource and a terrific avenue for the community.

People always get fair warning before being banned. I dont have time to hand hold everyone and give examples on how to re-write their posts in a less aggressive way. Others are free to do so though.

I think SG has enough to do besides hand-holding or babysitting some that don't have the civility to be respectful. Moderating all posts, even on a trial basis for new members, takes TONS of time.
Cowards, like some with two-letter user names and cute locations in their profile, are big on bashing others behind the anonymity of a forum.
Come back NME! Your posts are extremely valuable and educational. If others think they can do better, let's see you take the time to create videos and post your flights. |

Thank you. This is not a full time job. There is no way I can read every post on this forum each day.
Im simply asking people to follow the rules. Why is that so hard.
If youre not getting through to a pilot, walk away. Getting aggressive and name calling only solidifies their position.

NME is one of the coolest dudes to grace this forum in a long time. A good heart, great smarts, and excellent skills. Hard for me to believe someone would use their energy to belittle him. If you read this, John, most of us consider you a valued friend.
Problem with people is, some of them don't play well with others. If they kick sand in our electronic sand box at our good playmates, off with their moronic little heads.

I posted a video of , what I thought was a good landing.
Nme responded with ridicule. As if it were a personnel attack. Claiming were all being "deceived by this landing" , and that not all is as it seems. Untold damage will be the result. It was just a vid I found. I looked & looked at it. Could not figure out the drama. Then PV came over with statement that maybe NME had a touch of envy ,due to the poor landing skills he has shown. Maybe thats it. PV even offered tips. The spotlight was off. More vids followed. More abuse. I'll send a PM to the dude who owns the vid, just to see if he cares at all. Granted , I called MNE a nutter. After reading the retort of the vid he criticised, I thought he was a nutter. Big deal. He walked into the kitchen and started a fire. I'm not the type to turn up with an extingquisher, especially after the fact. So he's taken his bat & ball and gone home. Sorry to all you people out there. But I have no apologies for MNE. Life's tuff at times. So SG if banning me is next, so be it. I've gone flying. This isn't 10,000ft, and NME isn't god.
