Yikes! Glad it all worked out for you.

By the way, that's one area I thoroughly inspect during my preflight. I pull on that Dynema/Spectra cord where it goes through the sheeve and tilt the wings to get it to move a bit.

But I never imagined that line could end up around that post!

Thanks for sharing the photo. It will make all of us who have the same set up safer.

Damnit! Not only did I miss the Howl last weekend, now I'm going to miss another awesome weekend. I've been wanting to fly Dunlap again since I first went there 3 years ago with the Crestline crowd. Had I not booked tickets to visit a friend this weekend I'd be there in a flash, coring up through everyone and then looping my way back down to do it again. I'm bummed, this has not been my spring to make it to the fly-ins.

Get some good videos, and stay clear of that pond!
I love going out and coming back. Upwind is so much more of a struggle. One of my favorite flights I spent 3 hours trying to get like 7 miles upwind. The best I could do was around 4 miles. After almost every thermal I'd be back near the start.

Or the Last day of the 2010 Midwest HG Comp. We had a cross wind to the first turn point. After fighting the drift, waiting on my dad to catch up to me, I went on task. You had to spend 80% of your altitude just to get back upwind of the task line, and 20% moving towards the turn point. I ended up about 3 miles from turn point 1, but still had over 3 hours in the air.

Yep, I'm with you on this dent, it has to be the culprit that started the chain of events leading to the fracture. I say chain of events because ,, it took more than one bad landing to do this. It looks like the crossbar structure around the keel may have been partly responsible, like maybe a tail to the wind, while on the ground, and a very high wind load on top of the sail ???
_________________
U.S.H.G.A. # 20275
Rotor,

I wanted to throw this up here cause I think a lot of us are really curious about your trip and would love to hear daily postings from you. Tell us about the treatment, the progress, the people, and your experiences with the local people

I dont know what part of the Pi you are going to, but my bet is that you can have a really good time there

Why don't you chronicle this event for us?
You know what.. This is just crap! Here you guys are praising Mike Jefferson for flying your kids around and sacrificing his day of great Thermal flying! Like this was a good thing?HOGWASH!!

This was a greedy selfish act! His true intentions were to hide behind these tandem flights, in order to cover up his inadequacies as a thermaling pilot and awesome lander. You see he actually sucks as a pilot and since all those people were there he got scared and didn't want to look weak. So, he offered up these tandem flights as a way to get out of the embarrassment of looking like a third day student.

Mike... you may have everyone else fooled. Not me, I'm on to you

There certainly underlay a bigger problem with H2. There is no where to go.

here this guy shows with some hours aero tow static and a U2. I meet him for the first time at Ed Levin SG. I do watch some of his flying videos. I am encourage. I do tell him he does need to go to the training hill. We pointed him to a friend. Not sure what happen but was unable to get a flight in. I go out at lunch time so I can watch him fly off the 300ft. with the intention of taking him to Mcclure. He gets in a nice flight shows nice control but does so so on his launch but I am encourage. I do encourage yet again to go do some more L/L. The best laid out plans never work. House projects, family, flying and other things got in the way.

I believed he could get in a flight with the right conditions. I do invite him to Mcclure with the intention of him going off in the morning and in the late afternoon. I was hoping after May we could go out to the training hill. but in hindsight it should had been the other way around. he needed to go back to the training hill. Again it was not up to me what glider he was flying. YES this is wrong but its been done and we are human we tend to repeat ourselves. sad but true. I even got catch up in all the excitement to help this guy out. I really was not completly ready to take on someone. I thought since he had some hours I could get him to his h3 so he could get to funston and FLY. Plus with more than a few friends who would surely help him out as well.

Morning flight is okay as I said before next one not so good. Well he did have a nice flight. Again his launch was lacking but again so were plenty others.

I do not know why he has a U2 but he does. We do talk about it we are very concerned but again it been done. You can learn to fly a high performance glider you might not like the lessons it gives. I knew I was taking a chance but I was trying to help a guy out. It very hard to get airtime in the bayarea. I was hoping if he got his h3 it opens more doors. I know better the best intention are sometimes not good ones.

Saturday late afternoon ~4:30. I should had not let him fly that early. Normally it should be okay this day was not. The LZ was stil pretty active but if you do not land for another hour and half its is now 6pm and beyond.

I did just say in some other thread to make sure it is enjoyable. On launch I did think it was H3 landing and he was not. My mistake not to stop him or wait another hour. there was still plenty of sunlight. Would it made a difference? We will not know.

We walk over the whole lz upper lower - he got to see plenty of flying.

My bad trying to him help him. I'd do it again.

Hey Edward - Like I said I got a Falcon to get you back in the air sooner rather than later. Then move on from there. Honestly I am asking for it now. He could be on a DS. It can be safely. Flying Funston on a SS can not always be done safely. conditions can changed.

There was a lesson learned and truly am grateful that's all. thank the day!!!

He will go to the to the training and so will I. I will also be working on some of my own issues.
Not to steal the thread but it is related

Remember the part where I said I do not fly in the middle of afternoon. Well I broke my rule. I nearly PAID BIG TIME. Pretty much did what Edward did. my poor excuse -It was the heat of the day.

Monday we get to launch early and really we should had launch before the heat of the day got going. Mistake #1. Mentally I was winding down from the activity and thought i can relax today. NOT.

We finally start launching pilots going up. I get to launch and it is changing. I think I hate launching after it re-builds. Mistake #2. so I launch.

I am not getting it. I am not flying well. Bob and Fawkes are in the air. I am getting exciting about getting into the air. Not sure what I am doing. I am sinking out and it is THE HEAT OF THE DAY. OH BOY!

I work as hard i could to stay up and it is not workn. Not sure why i was gun ho for the lower LZ in a south. I could not tell ya if the upper portion is any better. It is the heat of the day. What was I thinking?

I eye my approach and i pull in downwidn. Mistake #3. I was not setting up my standard approach the one i have been working very hard on every time i go there. I am within 10ft of the spot for the contest on Saturday. I do here some say i 'looked' slow. No on board but ground. I do flare and run about 5 steps but i am very happy. I do feel as if the approach was a little odd. It could be lack of speed but i think it was just turby enough. It did keep my attention.

to continue my hairaising flight...

So now I am going downwind and i start to turn I immediately go up getting bounced and tossed. I get hit so hard i wonder about a 360. From experience a low 360 is NEVER good deal. but i can see why one would be tempted. I do not and start some figure 8. Mistake #4 I was not really making S turn. it is the hardest thing to do. I am shortening up my LZ. It is truly NOT looking good at this moment. XC BABY!!! who knows whats on the otherside!!!

Oh geez!! It is getting pretty hairy at this point. I do have some airspeed downhill and wind and some options for landing. Not many mostly bushes ahhhh there is this BEAUTIFUL uphill landing. Worse I can still plant it some bushes. if I feel as if ANY part of glider will hit. I was going to verve off and flare. I do not have to I do have one last little pine tree to deal with. Not sure what if this did not work.

I fly straight at the pine and over and FLARE. On my feet to my knees. I was
SAFE and VERY HAPPY to not have broken anything.

I am pretty sure Fawkes has video from above.

I do not mean to still the thread from Edward. There is a bigger problem. With mentors and continuing training but also arrogant. Tough and I was put to the test. Lesson learned.

I have an idea.

So many instead of fly in where there's speed glding and all sort of contest gear towards flying, make it fun to have a L/L contest. Or prove you can launch some lower performance before allowing to go up the hill

ALSO if there are fly in's do what LO - Call the flight rating 2, 3, 4 landing conditions.

so very sorry to scare anybody.

There does seem to be a thread from the entire weekend NOT JUST Mclure. It sounds as if there were accidents all over the country.

We will be heading out of town you bet FUN will be the game plan.

Keep on flaming you gonna do it anyways. There is good lessons i do hope some do learn from it.

I've always questioned doing risky things without insurance... but hell everyting we do is risky... and insurance......???

I've only known Dave just alittle while from traveling through Arkansas and having his help flying a few new sites but if everyone were like this guy we wouldn't need insurance. We would just all take care of one another.
Wow - it's amazing that you were able to make the second wire connection.

I thought you might have the same problem I encountered once. A tiny rock got stuck in the little groove where the fish-cam sets - on the rib that includes the right spoileron activator. I didn't notice that the cam wasn't fitting fully into the groove. The cam popped off in-flight which affected the alignment of the activator - the result was a veeery slow right roll response, because the spoileron was only partially activated.

There are no big/flat LZ's around Diablo, so I had to set up a landing using left-hand turns, without the ability to make any last-moment correction to the right. It worked out fine, but I now always take a moment to examine the rib grooves on setup.
