Step 1
Find a welding shop that will work with you.
Bend 2 pieces of square tubing, like this.
Drill holes at the top and at the bottom of the L. Pins will be out thru these to hold things in place.
Step 2
Get two short pieces of square tubing and drill holes thru them. Then weld the 2 pieces of square tubing to the under side of the front of your truck.
As you can see here, my guy doubled up on the square tubing
Step 3
Build the goal post. Start with one piece of square tubing, weld two small uprights to it. This will slide INTO the L-shaped bars we already made. The top smaller tubes at the bottom of the goal post were grinded down and tapered.
Here is a close up. There are holes drilled all the way thru the sides of the lower taperd posts. Pins will go thru to hold it together. You can also see the small flat piece of metal welded on the ends. IMPORTANT NOTE: You want this flat piece to stick DOWN below the main square tube. This keeps straps in place!
Step 4
Now just put it together. Insert the L shaped uprights into the square receivers under the truck.
Insert the pins and secure
Step 5
Slide the goal post into the L shaped bars and fasten with pins.
The finished product
Here is the finished product. The rear racks are Yakima, which I just bought off the shelf. This rack comes apart easily by removing the 4 pins. I have had up to 7 hang gliders on this rack at once. 5 wide, with 2 stacked. It is very strong. This rack is 8 years old and rusty, but its holding strong :)
